Guided Reading in Kindergarten Continued....

I wanted to share a little more today about guided reading  in my classroom. I am including a generic  lesson plan form that is easy to use, you just change the name of the book you are using,  high frequency words and teaching points (based on Common Core standards). I use the Beanie Baby reading strategies. Can Do Kinders blog has a great download you can print out for use in your classroom. There are many out on the web, Pinterest has many boards devoted to Reading Strategies for emergent readers.

Guided Reading in Kindergarten

I have maintained a website Linda's Learning Links for the past 10 years. It will be closed down in September. Guided Reading in Kindergarten has been one of the most popular pages on my website. I've updated the page and turned it into an article. I spend the first month of school teaching the routines of guided reading. As students make progress and are assessed for reading levels, guided reading groups change. In future posts, I will share information sheets that I maintain for each student. I hope you will find the article helpful.

Pete's Big Lunch

One of my Literacy Workstations is the Retelling Center. Since Pete is a big favorite with my kindergarteners, I decided he's going to star in my Literacy and Math Workstations in August! Here's the first one, I hope you will enjoy it.
I laminate the sheets, cut out the pieces and either put magnets on the back or velcro ( I still have a small flannel board that I use often in my centers).
Common Core Aligned:
K.RL.2
With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.
Kindergarten Works has some fabulous retelling centers, with lots of how to's on setting up a retelling center!

Swat The Old Black Fly Game

What happens when a kindergarten teacher walks into Dollar Tree and sees a giant fly swatter? She decides that The Old Black Fly by Jim Aylesworth needs to be read and a game needs to be made. So, because we are working on number words and revisiting color words, I made the Swat the Old Black Fly game. We have had a ball playing the game as a team game (I bought two flyswatters)
So, run to Dollar Tree and pick up a giant fly swatter (or use the regular size) and print out, laminate and cut out the old black flies and play away!!

A little more Seuss!

I like to make ppts of the guided reading books I use with my class. I am also including a smartboard version, it will be great for finding rhyming words, sight words and determining the number of syllables in words from the story. I also make response sheets for each guided reading book I use, I'm including the response sheet as well. I hope you will enjoy using them with your students.
P.S. The font used in all of the items is Dr. Soos Bold.
